Exciting/severe jealous-inducing news from the Phillips Hong Kong Watch Auction, where after a tense 30-minute bidding war one unnamed gazillionaire walked off with a rose gold Patek Philippe.
The price? A cool USD2,533,202* or RM10 million/SGD3.5 million.
So what's so special about the Patek Philippe reference 2499? Well, aside from looking the business and—y'know—being made by Patek Philippe, the timepiece is extremely rare.
The model was in production between 1951 and 1988, a period that yielded only 349 (Eric Clapton has one of them) of which a tiny amount again were made of rose gold. In fact, only five watches that resemble the 2499 are known in the world, making this a very special piece of horology indeed.
