The Mille Miglia is a race like no other in the world. During it's heyday, it was as dangerous as any of the classic races like Pau or Rheims and equally as glamourous as Monte Carlo. Its run came to an end in 1957 when it has two horrific crashes in quick succession that took the lives of not only the drivers but also spectators. Twenty years on then, the race was re-opened as a classic or vintage car race with competitors only allowed to use cars made before 1957. In time, the vintage race took on a life of its own and in 1988, Chopard entered the fray by being the official timekeeper which it continues to do until today.
It helps of course when the bosses of the company are racing enthusiasts in siblings Karl-Friedrich and Caroline Scheufele. They actually compete in the race that goes from Brescia to Rome and back in 1000 miles (Mille Miglia is one thousand miles in Italian). They are passionate about racing and talking to them about it, you can see why the Mille Miglia Limited Editions over the years have taken much from the history of the race, They also know how to win and that usually involves racing a great car and having a great driver, in recent times, that would be endurance racing legend Jacky Ickx.
It was fun to see Mr Ickx in Singapore recently to luanch the Mille Miglia Race Edition 2018 timepiece . The Hour Glass at Malmaison by The Hour Glass played hosts over an evening of cocktails and celebrations. Welcome addresses was followed by Mr Lim Hock Thiam, General Manager of The Hour Glass and Mr Stephan Ritzmann, CEO Chopard, Asia Pacific Region.
On display were an array of classic racing timepieces as well as the Mille Miglia Race Edition 2018 in Stainless Steel. Guests were treated to a delectable customized french canapés menu complimented with champagne and wines where elements of the Mille Miglia Race were incorporated, specially created for the night.
