The ideas of traditional masculinity have changed. Rules are being challenged and boundaries pushed, where conversations on menswear are explored through freedom and looked beyond the status quo. “In the ‘90s there was such a specific idea of A man but, since then, fashion has evolved dramatically and today one cannot define men in just that same, clear way. What I wanted to show in this collection are the different facets of a man, who, like everyone, dresses according to the occasion and has gained the courage that he didn’t have before. If I had to find a word that defines today’s men, it would be daring,” says Donatella Versace, on her Autumn/Winter 2019 collection.
The latest collection by Versace is a play between sportswear and sartorial tailoring. The archived bondage jackets from the Gianni-era coalescing with playful baroque printed dress shirts were one of the key highlights of the show. While the razor-sharp suit tailoring were seizing to desist, what really caught the font row’s attention was the atelier’s footwear of the season. With Versace’s newest urban sneaker entrant labelled the ‘Squalo’, it was quite easily one of the hot topics of the collection. Named after the Italian word for ‘shark’, the new Squalo sneaker’s designed was inspired by the free movement of the oceans and the great white shark.
A wave message incorporated into its line is reminiscent of the movement of sharks swimming through the water, while the shape of the outsole brings to mind the outline of a shark’s tooth. The designer takes direct inspiration from the free movement of the oceans and as the ‘king of its own element’, the Squalo sneaker makes it an Esquire must have. And of course, there is no justification to high fashion sneakers without the minute details—you’ll find the word ‘Love’ written in braille on the toe box and the Versace logo embossing on both the tongue and heels caps.
When it comes to its Gatsby-like colourways, the Italian luxury house has a lot to offer—making this release appeal to all preferences. A ‘symbol for freedom’ much accompanied by the movements of the sharks makes the Squalo sneaker one of the fieriest and eye-catching sneakers of 2019.
The Squalo sneaker hits Versace stores from RM3,650.
