Clash de Cartier is an oxymoron.
On the one hand, the new line from the French jeweller boasts an aristocratic quality; comprised of codes and components drawn from the maison’s heritage of studs, beads and clous carrés (that’s French for ‘square nails’ boys; keep that little titbit in your back pocket to whip out at dinner parties). In essence, it’s an amalgamation of design elements that have, separately, existed as part of Cartier’s oeuvre and penchant for geometric shapes since the 1930s.
Yet, on the other, with all those powers combined (kind of like Captain Planet, but minus the bad hair) Clash de Cartier takes on a new form. It exudes a contemporary spark. Daring. Edgy. Counterculture. And featuring fixed yet moveable studs, the hardness of those individual nails almost feeling softer; tactile and preloaded with energy.
Dr Jekyll, meet Mr Hyde.
And here’s the real kicker: the new Clash de Cartier in glistening 18-carat pink gold looks just as good on your wrist as it does on hers.
Pink gold you say? Correct. It’s the perfect midpoint between the steely indifference of white gold and the ostentatious look-at-me attraction of yellow gold. With a higher content of copper than its yellow gold brother, the pink gold alloy matches any skin tone (fair, dark and every shade in-between) but preserves the hypnotic allure of golden sunshine without being, well, blinding.
Pink gold is like that dapple golden light at dusk as opposed to the glaring midday sun of yellow gold. A wink and a nudge of your taste and discernment…
Pink gold is like that dapple golden light at dusk as opposed to the glaring midday sun of yellow gold. A wink and a nudge of your taste and discernment that stands proudly on its own, but also makes one helluva stacking partner with your watch or when mixed-and-matched with other pieces.
But what if you really want to pack a punch? Cast your eyes on the limited-edition Clash de Cartier in resplendent 18-carat yellow gold adorned with red coral (yup, it’s our personal fave).
Bigger. Bolder. Braver. And those polished clous carrés? Well, they’ve been replaced with statement coral beads. Ballsy! Not just a daily touch of luxury wrapped around your wrist, but an instant heirloom.
But that essence of opposition in the original Clash de Cartier still carries through. The soft contours of the coral are offset by the assertive and oversized nails that rattle with each flick of the wrist.
It’s Tim Cook meets Elon Musk.
It’s Roger Federer meets Mike Tyson.
It’s James Bond meets Jason Bourne.
Yup, it’s Daniel freaking Craig.
