The wait is finally over. Since teasing his collaboration with Chanel at their cruise presentation in Bangkok last November, Pharrell has finally unveiled his much hyped about capsule. Titled 'Chanel Pharrell', the collection is painted with a palette of rainbow hues, draws references to street art, and features a combination of ready-to-wear pieces, accessories and footwear with a gender-neutral slant; a nod to Pharrell's personal style. He goes on to elaborate that, when he started wearing Chanel, "gender fluidity and these things addressing gender weren’t as loud and pronounced as they are now. I was just doing it because it was just the way I felt.”
Stand out pieces include block-colour T-shirts, oversized hoodies, rhinestone costume jewellery as well as circular sunglasses. The house iconic symbols like the CC, N°5 and Coco are given the Pharrell treatment; reimagined in his own handwriting and embroidered onto pieces.
But our favourite piece from the collection is also the item that has the most personal connection with Pharrell—a long sleeve shirt that tells the story of a bet that he had made with a friend. Pharrell believed that he would never be able to work with Chanel. When recounting the story, he said, "I lost the bet. It was a bet that I’ve been happy to lose.”
The capsule collection is the first ever collaboration for the historic house; one dreamt up by their late artistic director, Karl Lagerfeld. When asked about the landmark collaboration, the multi-hyphenate artist said: “But they’re not afraid of these things. Just like [Coco Chanel] wasn’t afraid. There don’t need to be boundaries." Pharrell continues, "As long as you can hold on to the heritage, and continue to push it, like Karl always does, we don’t need walls—we need bridges.”
