The Air Max 97 is one of those sneakers that manages to feel both entirely of its era and completely outside of time. Like flying cars and jetpacks and floating treadmills, it's retro futurism at its best: a vision of an idealized "someday" that could have only been dreamed up on a very specific real day many years past.

Each option is equally plausible. In fact, it's really a combination of the two that gives the 97 its particular mojo. The ratio of that combo? Unknown. But whatever way you slice it, it's a silhouette that's managed to rise to the top of the favorites list for the discerning Air Max fan. Considering the competition—from the AM1 to the 90 to the brand-new VaporMax—that's no small feat.

If you're a fan, don't sleep. The drop hits at 10:00 AM EDT, and this thing will be gone faster than the bullet trains that inspired it.
