Given the bushy 'tache, slight paunch and certificate in plumping you probably assumed video game icon Mario was comfortably into middle age.
But according to his creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, the Nintendo character is a mere 24-years-old.
The revelation—sure to send shockwaves through the gaming community—came about thanks to a unearthed 2005 interview posted on the company's website.
"I think it was fortuitous that we didn't put any restrictions on Mario as a character," say Miyamoto in the footage.
"Normally when you create a character and present him to the world, all the details get filed in: what's his favourite colour? what kind of food does he like to eat?"
"But aside from the fact that he's about 24-25 years old, we didn't define anything else."
Esquire has filed an Freedom of Information Request with SEGA to find out the exact age of Sonic the Hedgehog, and will report back soon.
