Those Planned Avatar Sequels Will Be 'Many Times More Amazing' Than Avatar
And may or may not be released before all of us are dead.

James Cameron's proposed series of four Avatar sequels has been percolating for so long that it began to feel like an idle threat–until this September, when he finally revealed some vague script details.
Sigourney Weaver has apparently read the scripts for Avatar 2, Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 (a moment of silence here for her mental resilience), and indicated to Variety that the long-awaited result will be a quadrilogy for the ages. "In my opinion, the three scripts I've read so far are many times more amazing than the first one in terms of their scope," Weaver enthused. "[Cameron] did a lot of the heavy lifting in the first movie, establishing the family and the relationships and the world, and now he really gets to play."
Playtime begins for the rest of us in December 2018, when Avatar 2 is theoretically scheduled for release. The sequels will follow in December 2020, 2022, and 2023, respectively–but nothing has been shot yet, with filming on the second movie due to begin next year. Cameron has made it clear in the past that time is a flat circle and release dates are made to be moved, so don't hold your breath on any of this.
