Ever thought Rajinikanth’s quippy one-liners would work perfectly in BM? Well, you’re in luck, as Rajini’s new release Kabali will be the first Tamil film ever to be dubbed in Bahasa Malaysia.
Featuring the Thalaivar in a slightly more age-appropriate wig than usual, Kabali is loosely based on the life of Chennai mobster, and sees the titular protagonist defending his family against rival gangs.
Most of the movie was shot here, with Rajini’s arrival in the country last year for the shoot causing some stir—with him ‘stealing’ Amber Chia’s Hello Kitty limo, netizens thanking him for stopping the haze, and some even calling for him to, um, involve himself in local politics.
The BM version of Kabali will be released next month, with joint producers Malik Streams behind the dubbing. In case the company sounds familiar, it’s because they were alleged to be responsible for the Hello Kitty limo fiasco—the iniquity and absurdity of which was probably entirely appropriate for a Kollywood gangster drama.
Rajini’s BM voice will be handled by impressionist Arun Kumaran. Jalaluddin Hassan, of Who Wants to be a Millionaire and massage chair fame, will also lend his smooth baritone to the movie, as well as Nur Kasih co-star Nur Fathia.
0:05 to 0:28 of the video below has a sampling of Rajini in BM. It truly is… a thing to behold.
Kabali is slated to be released in Malaysian cinemas from July 22.
