Bill Maher Finally Scored An Interview With President Obama
They talked about marijuana, socialism, and—of course—Donald Trump.

It finally happened. After years of pleading, Bill Maher scored an interview with President Barack Obama for a nearly 40-minute interview. During a sit-down in the Roosevelt Room, the two discussed a range of topics—from the media to marijuana to atheism. Basically, they hit Maher's favourite topics.
The first 18 minutes of the interview were broadcast on HBO, while the full version (above) was posted to YouTube.
The conversation began with the media and how it has changed with the evolution of the web and technology.
"The question I'd have when it comes to the media is, 'How do we create a space where the truth gets eyeballs and is entertaining,' and we can build a common conversation," Obama said, adding, "You've got 800 stations, you have all these websites, and people have difficulty sorting out what's true."
"If you don't have some common baseline of facts... it's very hard to figure out how we move democracy forward," Obama continued. "If I watched Fox News, I wouldn't vote for me either."
Maher then moved the conversation to one of his favourite issues: marijuana legalisation.
"To the extent that society legitimately wants to guard against any kind of substance abuse, you treat it as a public health problem," Obama responded, likening it to smoking cigarettes and adding that he is an ex-smoker.
"Ex?" Maher asked. "Really?"
"Ex," Obama said, "Yeah."
Then he winked.
Obama got serious, though. "I don't think that legalisation is a panacea, but we're going to have to have a more serious conversation about how we are treating marijuana and our drug laws generally."
This interview was a bit of a coup for Maher, and to top it off, when it ended, Obama said that while he may not have appeared on the show often, he did watch the show frequently.
"You did a hell of a job in this office... it means a lot that you did this," Maher said.
Obama replied, "Even though I wasn't on the show that often, I watched it all the time."
