Man at His Best

The Soho Hotel London

A savvy chic stay in the heart of town.

Tucked away in an unassuming corner of Soho, the Kit Kemp-designed hotel is a reflection of London’s bohemian spirit: explosive colours, unexpected textures and a riot of decorations—it’s as though the designer was on an acid trip when she conceptualised it. That’s not to say it’s without flair though. A 10ft bronze sculpture by Fernando Botero stands guard at the foyer that leads to the aesthetically-busy Library, Drawing Room and REFUEL restaurant and bar—where I instantly spot a gaggle of social media influencers sipping cocktails at noon.

But the wow factor really kicks in when I walk into my room on the fifth floor. The one-bedroom Soho suite is so large it makes my apartment in KL feel like a shoebox. It has not one but two wraparound terraces offering sweeping views of the London skyline. The living room is awash in pink hues and boasts a retro cast-iron fireplace, Moroccan rugs and plush sofas where I laze around all afternoon, drinking tea and listening to Beatles records. The white marble bathroom—with a gloriously deep tub big enough for two—is also a work of art in its own right. I was told that Jared Leto and Kim Kardashian once stayed in this suite (separately) but that’s another story.

The grey-and-taupe bedroom on the opposite end of the suite is less dramatically-decorated and cosier. The next morning, I opt for a full English breakfast (but of course), which I enjoy on the terrace to make the most of the London sunshine. Pure bliss. Just as blissful as having spent the night in the Soho suite.
