Last Resort: 137 Pillars Bangkok

Come for the hotel, stay for the view.

The story of 137 Pillars began in Chiang Mai: housed in the historic Borneo Trading Company, built in 1889, this boutique hotel is a nostalgic blend of Thai architecture and modern design. Not only rich in history, it is every inch a tranquil, scenic and luxurious space.

Its sister property in bustling Bangkok, opened just last year, surprisingly echoes the same qualities. Seated in the quiet but trendy residential area of Thonglor, the property is a stone’s throw away from everything you need from Bangkok – shopping, food, nightlife, massages, and all that jazz. The shuttle service to its nearby BTS station (with its famous London cab) is definitely a plus point. Service, as you’d expect with Thai hospitality, is faultless.

Of all 34 suites (which are named after royal kingdoms throughout Thailand’s history), we had the pleasure of staying in the Ayutthaya Suites. The suite’s warm aesthetics with a focus on wood and marble are pleasing to the eye. It also comes with a spacious balcony, daybed and a rocking chair that overlooks the Bangkok city. But what we really enjoyed are the modern amenities like self-censoring lights, the giant bathtub (that could easily fit more than two people), walk-in wardrobe and butler service. Suite guests will also have access to the rooftop pool. Open 24 hours, the rooftop offers an unbeatable skyline of Bangkok from day to night. Best come at sundown for the perfect Instagram picture.

Beyond that, there are plenty of Instagrammable spots around the hotel too, like the infinity pool and Marble Bar on Level 27, and the Koi garden right at the hotel’s entrance on the ground floor. If you need a haircut, there’s a Japanese hair salon on the 6th floor. But you don’t come to a hotel like 137 Pillars just to take pictures: hit the gym and sign up for a Muay Thai class, play a round of simulated golf, or simply relax at the Nitra spa. Tips: stay in one of the suites to enjoy the complimentary breakfast, drinks and snacks at the Leonowens club lounge and access to the rooftop. Trust us, the views are worth it.
