Four getaway digs for the Merdeka weekend
Kampung Baru is one of the hottest global travel hotspots, says Airbnb
The 60th Merdeka Day is packing them in for the long weekend. Airbnb reports that bookings by travellers to Malaysia are up 71% compared with other weekends in August. On the other side of the fence, Malaysians are looking to spend Merdeka weekend away from home, with Airbnb reporting a 77% increase in outbound travellers compared with other weekends in the month. They’re not going far, though: George Town, Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur are the three most popular destinations for Malaysians over the long weekend.
But it’s KL’s Kampung Baru that’s one of Airbnb’s global hotspots of 2017. The capital’s pioneer Malay urban settlement was once a diverse place of juxtaposed cultures, so it’s also a foodies’ paradise: you know the kueh from those hipster places in those malls way over there? The ulam? This is the source. If you'd like to try your luck with getting a place, here's one Airbnb spot for the picking:
Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur
Prized view of KL Tower. Lots of action down below. Location, location, location.
Or if you'd like to see more of the sea and with a bit of heritage thrown in for good measure, try George Town.
This listing is near Gurney Drive, so there will be street and restaurant food. But mosey along the smaller streets or wander slightly further yonder to avoid the crowds and being scalped.
A Penang picture window! You could fit a whale (of a time) in this many-bedded space. Sea on one side and shopping on the other.
This converted property is your launch pad to explore George Town on foot. Lots of natural light and lovely kitchen too.
