Johnnie Walker launches a limited edition Blenders’ Batch Bourbon Cask & Rye

Whisky cocktails and late-night lok lok couldn’t get more Malaysian than this.

The road to creating great things is often littered with experiments, but it’s the end result that really matters. Whisky is no different. For years, Johnnie Walker’s team of expert blenders, led by Dr Jim Beveridge have experimented with hundreds of flavours and blends but those experiments have not seen the light of day—at least not until now.

For the first time, the brand is introducing a few of these experimental blends under the Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch limited edition series. At an exclusive, two-day event held at the Vault in Sri Hartamas this month, the Bourbon Cask & Rye Finish was the first blend to be introduced to Malaysians.

The blend draws on Johnnie Walker’s master blender Dr. Jim Beveridge’s 40 years of experience in whisky-making. Over 200 whisky samples from five distilleries went through the vetting process of making the cut for this blend. The result: a carefully selected Scotch whisky blend, augmented by the honey-sweet aroma of bourbon and rye casks in a six-month ageing process.

Guests were invited to experiment with flavours by making their own cocktails using Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch and simple ingredients including eggs, coffee, cinnamon sticks, maple syrup, ginger, oranges, grapefruits and more.

Limited quantities of this precious scotch are sold out but no matter, because organisers made sure that the launch party was anything but dry. Guests on both evenings were treated to two main cocktails—the Evenfall and the Butterfly, both featuring Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch Bourbon Cask & Rye Finish as its base. To add to the interactivity of the launch, guests could head up to the top floor bar and whip up custom cocktails of their own, with the help of mixologists.

But any self-respecting party animal understands the folly of imbibing without consuming some sort of food, and so it was a pleasant surprise to find out that the services of a lok lok truck had been retained for the event.
