If you aren’t familiar with Harriston chocolates, it’s time to get familiar. The home-grown chocolate makers established its brand since 2005, having served more than eight million customers, offering more than 150 different types of chocolates, and now with six flagship stores across Malaysia. This year, Harriston opens Harriston Chocolatier, a gourmet chocolate boutique which offers fine chocolates through quality ingredients. They’ve also decided to partner with lifestyle dining establishments such as Bo Dining and Cellar 18, so guests can discover and pair the chocolates accordingly.
With suitable climate for cocoa farming here in Malaysia, we were one of the top three producers of cocoa beans worldwide in 1996, with more than 250,000 tonnes of beans produced. However, it’s reported that only 3,000 tonnes of beans were produced last year. Now to fight for the cocoa industry, Harriston Chocolatier creates Single Origin Chocolates. This not only helps the farmers, but to build basic infrastructure in terms of growing the crops and services to thrive.
“We saw this as the perfect opportunity to further support our local cocoa farmers and let them know that we are in this journey together with them. It is of great importance that we offer support to them as they are the backbone of our industry. Without them, chocolates will no longer be as accessible, and we hope that our Single Origin Chocolate Bars will change that. This is a collective effort between Harriston and local cocoa farmers to put Malaysian cocoa back on the map. By promoting truly local products and unique flavours that come with them, we aim to improve the ecosystem of the industry and venture into more sustainable initiatives such as this while creating a long-lasting relationship with the farmers.” said Queenie Teng, Executive Director of Harriston Chocolatier.
Now what so special about Single Origin Chocolates? Single origin chocolates are made by cocoa beans taken from a single source of origin referring to the home of cocoa beans used which are catalogued, weighed and stored in a controlled environment before being made into chocolates. The flavour profile of a true single origin can be a very complex process which some may even say, be on par with creating the perfect bottle of wine.
Harriston Chocolatier creates three Single Origin Chocolates aptly named Titiwangsa Single Origin, Hulu Selangor Single Origin and Raub Single Origin – with each chocolate bar having its own story. Harriston believes that with a combination of local cultivation, creativity and consumption, we’re all able to help put Malaysia back on the map as top chocolate producers and to further support the local cocoa industry.
Titiwangsa Single Origin
Harvested from the Semai native tribal village in Pahang, the indigenous community work tirelessly to ensure the highest form of quality for all cocoa beans produced. With low acidity levels and a complex after taste, the taste profile of this origin embodies tones of saké, seafood, roasted rice, amber caramel, lightly roasted cashew, and red tea. With a strategic location of an altitude of 450m (1500ft) at the peak of Pahang, the cocoa beans harvested here are grown in a mixed crop of agro-forestry setting. Through a CSR program, this initiative currently impacts more than 150 families in the area.
Hulu Selangor Single Origin
The Hulu Selangor Single Origin bar is sourced from cocoa beans grown and harvested from old trees in Batang Kali, spanning 20 acres wide. These cocoa beans hold a taste profile unlike any other due to the depth if the roots. Flavours go between notes of jaggery, spice, saffron, tart cherry, and citrus.
Raub Single Origin
The Raub Single Origin bar hails from the Koh Cacao farm in the town of Sungai Ruan. With most of its residents being rubber tappers and farmers, their knowledge in the harvesting industry precedes many. This can be proven with the quality cocoa beans produced by the father and son duo whom have been operating their cocoa farm for the past 33 years. With fruit orchards and other farms surrounding it, the cacao beans harvested in this specific farm is known to have a distinct taste, giving out a subtle smoky and nutty flavour while bringing forth a hint of sweet acidity. 100% natural, vegan, gluten-free and nut-free.
The Titiwangsa Single Origin Chocolate Bar is priced at RM30 per unit while both Hulu Selangor and Raub Single Origin Chocolate Bars are priced at RM25 per unit. All products can be found only at Harriston Chocolatier, The Linc KL, Jalan Tun Razak.
