We're geniuses in the shower. Groundbreaking ideas (or just like, really cool thoughts) come to us mid-scrub. We are not, unfortunately, geniuses in front of our computers at the office. According to Science of Us, that's because our brain doesn't use the same thought process when we are actively trying to problem-solve.
Researchers found that when asked to complete a word or picture puzzle, participants were more successful when the answer came to them as a flash of insight instead of through an analytical thought process—a 94 percent success rate versus 78 percent. That's because analysing a problem means you consciously think through bad options, which can influence your answer. But when the answer comes as a eureka moment, your brain has already unconsciously eliminated the bad options.
That's why shower time, generally just "me time," is actually peak time for idea generation. Just don't think about it too hard.
