The highly-anticipated trailer for Crazy Rich Asians is now here–and yes–it sure lives up to its title. We see first-class air travels, millions of dollars of jewellery, cars, designer fashion, Gatsbyesque parties, and the mother (Michelle Yeoh).
Based on the 2013 best-selling Kevin Kwan novel of the same name, this is Malaysian (proud!) Henry Golding’s first ever acting role playing Nick Young, “The Asian Prince Harry”. Also starring as the female lead Rachel Chu is everyone’s favourite Fresh Off the Boat’s Constance Wu.
It’s ground-breaking times in Hollywood as Crazy Rich Asians features an all-Asian cast (and filmed entirely on location in Singapore and Malaysia). According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kwan met with a potential producer during the early stages that suggested the character of Rachel be changed from Chinese-American to white. “They wanted to change the heroine into a white girl,” he said. “I was like, ‘Well, you’ve missed the point completely.’ I said, ‘No, thank you.'”
The full-length trailer debuted on The Ellen DeGeneres Show as Henry and Constance talked more about the film then played a cash grabbing game (won’t we like that) where Henry stuffed lots of dollars into his Ellen briefs.
Directed by Jon M Chu (Now You See Me 2), Crazy Rich Asians will reach local theatres on August 16 2018.
