From "This Is The Place" by Tony Walsh:
We keep fighting back with Greater Manchester spirit
Northern grit, northern wit, and Greater Manchester’s lyrics
And these hard times again, in these streets of our city
But we won’t take defeat and we don’t want your pity.
Whatever you think of poetry, there is a reason why we tend to reach for it during the overwhelming moments in life - weddings, births and deaths.
During the vigil held in Manchester yesterday to mourn the passing of the 22 adults and children killed in Monday's terror attack, thousands of people watched as local poet Tony Walsh performed 'This Is The Place', a piece that articulated the sense of pride, sorrow and most of all resistance flowing through a great and deeply pained city.
It was both a tribute to those lost and a stirring call to arms for those who remain. It did a job that, frankly, only poetry can do. And it was, like Walsh, Manchester through and through. Give it a listen.
