It’s a no-brainer to mention that Seoul is a major player in the tourism industry. Countless travellers have walked its streets and even more want to visit. As a fast-paced city that is also very fashionable, standing out and being a trendsetter is no easy feat. However, that’s exactly what RYSE Hotel is doing, and succeeding. Located in the middle of the bustling Hongdae district and opened for just under a year, the hotel has received nothing but praise; it can now also count Esquire as fans. Even though the Hongdae district is where you’ll find some of the best cafés, bars, bookshops and vibrant young energy (there’s an art university located here), RYSE Hotel isn’t just a place to head back for a night’s rest after a long day of exploring. The exploring happens in the hotel itself as well—it’s a creative hub in its own right.

Let us explain. This 274-room property part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection was designed by the renowned London-based Michaelis Boyd. The pink resin floors and raw concrete surfaces offer more than enough spots for a cool photo op. Looking for coffee and snacks? They’ve got Tartine Bakery, straight out of San Francisco. A signature restaurant? Long Chim is led by chef David Thompson of Michelin-starred Nahm. A bar or lounge? Head up to the 15th floor for Side Note Club to enjoy the stunning view of the city and a great collection of vinyl records, while sipping on drinks by the team from the award-winning Le Chamber. Elsewhere in the hotel is also an art gallery, a library (with a brilliant selection of books, magazine and zines, and background music by the way), and a streetwear flagship store, Worksout.

There are six room and suite categories, with each offering a comfortable space filled with personal touches and fine points that will appeal to those who delight in the details. From cotton bathrobes (made in collaboration with IISE, a Seoul-based clothing brand) to sachets of coffee and tea, RYSE Hotel has thought of and provided every comfort for its guests. And instead of tacky hotel picture frames, the hotel’s cool in-house posters printed with Risograph printers are prominently displayed.

If you’re heading out, ask a staff for recommendations to the city; they know what’s up. RYSE Hotel is more than just a “destination hotel”; it also feels like a local hangout, a place where the curious (and not just hotel guests) can explore and discover new experiences. In a time where collaborations are everything, Ryse Hotel sure does it pretty damn well.
