Now that Twentieth Century Fox is officially owned by Disney, the X-Men Cinematic Universe is due for a major overhaul. But before Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, can work the iconic mutant saga into his all-encompassing Marvel Cinematic Universe, Dark Phoenix will see Fox's X-Men take flight one last time. While it's not completely clear as to whether this upcoming film is the last time we'll see this particular iteration of the X-Men, based on the trailer that dropped this morning, it looks like they are going out in flames. Because Sophie Turner's Jean Grey is killing everybody up in here.
With every new Fox X-Men film, the movie universe gets closer to the baroque zaniness that we loved from the '90s X-Men animated series. Dark Phoenix looks to be the closest one yet. The latest trailer shows the Children of the Atom, at long last, blasting off into space. This sort of absurd, planet-hopping nonsense may seem a bit excessive to fans of the long-running film franchise, but for devotees of the comics and animated series, seeing the X-Men floating through space should bring back some very fun memories. In the '90s, the friendly mutants were always ripping through time and space, fighting on exotic locations throughout the galaxy.
Tye Sheridan’s Cyclops gazes into the abyss of space in the final trailer for Dark Phoenix, witnessing the dark possession of his teammate and partner, Jean Grey, played by Sophie Turner.
20th Century Fox/Disney
The Dark Phoenix saga is one of the most famous tales from the rich, storied history of the X-Men. While it was broached a bit in the sorely upsetting X-Men: The Last Stand, many of us have been wishing for a film adaptation that's more faithful to the comics. It looks like the films writer-director, Simon Kinberg, is taking a more direct approach this time. This final trailer for the film shows the familiar images of Jean Grey getting consumed by an alien force, with the power of the so-called "Phoenix" consuming and possessing her vulnerable, yet super-powered brain.
From there, it seems that Sophie Turner's "Dark Phoenix" is out for blood. The trailer shows Jean tearing apart Michael Fassbender's Magneto, annihilating Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique, and even, in one sequence, lighting up her old friend and mentor, Charles Xavier, who's played by James McAvoy. The Last Stand saw Jean Grey explode Patrick Stewart's version of the Professor X character, and based on what is shown here in this very revealing two minute trailer, it may be safe to say that McAvoy's days as the wheelchair-bound telepath are similarly numbered.
Dark Phoenix is slated for release on June 7th. With Avengers: Endgame premiering just a little over a month prior, time will tell if comic books fans have room for more than one superhero movie franchise on their radar.
