Alternative Reviews of Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2018

No, we're not reviewing the clothes.

Long gone are the days when fashion week is only about designers and labels showcasing clothes; these days, so much happens during fashion week – parties, pop-up stores, “street-style” snaps, celebrity sightings – you could say it has evolved into a coagulated theatrical show.

So, after almost 100 collections, thousands of runway pieces and an unprecedented heat wave later, what did we learn about Paris’ Men’s Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2018? Here are some of the unofficial highlights from the scorching French capital.

Most interesting show venue: Dries van Noten

Dries got us trekking all the way up to the 8th floor of an office building on a 36°C afternoon. Fortunately, the former offices of French left-wing newspaper, Libération was a thing of beauty. The newsmen must have left the offices in a hurry, leaving trails of old PCs, desks, clocks and walls of manila files full of information that suggests the strife-torn world we live in today, while reminding us of the beautiful bygone era where newspapers were once the main source of media. Oh, and the pushcarts with ice-cold beverages on each floor certainly helped the climb too.

Best show soundtrack: Signs by Drake at Louis Vuitton

The One Dance-esque song was released exclusively at the show, and according to Kim Jones, Drake wrote the song especially for the collection. From Supreme last season to Drake this time, talk about killing it at the collaboration game. Listen the song here:

Best after-party: Loewe

When the guest list includes Rick Owens, Stefano Pilati and A$AP Rocky, you know it's going to be an awesome party. Called ‘Fire of Youth Summer,’ Loewe's after-party took place at the Institue du Monde Arabe until 6am with tunes from names of DJs whom I could not remember, thanks to all the vodka shots from that super chic French bartender – whose name I could not remember either.

Favorite celebrity sighting: Kyle MacLachlan at Balenciaga & Gong Yoo at Louis Vuitton

Twin Peaks star Kyle MacLachlan wearing Balenciaga at the Balenciaga show: Do we need to say more? But I was pretty psyched to see our cover guy Gong Yoo at Louis Vuitton too whom I might (or might not) have accidentally taken a picture with.

Best show invite: Paul Smith & Juun J.

Sir Paul Smith sent out rubber fish with a Japanese tag as a form of invitation (cute!) as he was inspired by old Tokyo market; while Juun J’s detachable shirt collar invitation (cool!) very much reinforces his strong suit for shirting.

Most talk-about pop-up: Balenciaga X Colette

If you throw a stone in Colette this month, chances are you’ll hit a Balenciaga fan boy. The six-week pop-up is currently selling items like sleeping masks, umbrellas, mugs and one can even order a T-shirt customised with tacky Balenciaga logos. Printed on-site, they cost 225(!) euros each. The queue has not stopped since.

Most confused menswear show: Thom Browne

The designer sent out skinned-head male models in 2-inch heels, skirts and dresses and paired them with his signature suits. And the finale? A groom-bride look with black tux in the front and full-skirted wedding dress at the back. Uhm, wait, what?
