This Designer Is Changing The Face Of Men's Fashion
Demna Gvasalia, of Vetements and Balenciaga, had a very good 2016.

Only two short years ago, "vetements" was nothing more than the French word for "clothes." Since 2014, however, it's become a signifier of insider status and general cool-guy-ness. That's because Vetements—proper noun, pronounced vet-MAHN, in case you're wondering—is a fashion brand/collective that throws elements of the avant-garde, skater culture, and street style into a magical blender and comes out with some of the most talked-about clothes of the last decade. And the man behind it all, Demna Gvasalia, has just been named Business of Fashion's Person of the Year for 2016.
Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Belgium, 35-year-old Gvasalia—who was born in Soviet Georgia—worked as a designer for Maison Martin Margiela and Louis Vuitton before launching Vetements in 2014. And though we think of Vetements as a fashion brand, what it actually is is a bit of a mystery. Formed along with his brother Guram Gvasalia—who acts as the company's CEO—Vetements is technically a fashion collective, one that employs multiple designers, but with Demna Gvasalia as the head.
However they organise it, in its short existence Vetements has generated some serious heat in the fashion world. Oversized, mis-proportioned jackets and hoodies, USD800 DHL-branded shirts, USD1,000 Snoop Dogg tees, and a general air of Eastern Bloc cool have helped propel Gvasalia from outsider streetwear designer to major force in fashion—in 2015 he was tapped as creative director of French fashion house Balenciaga—in the space of only two years.
Which brings us to BoF's Person of the Year. Other than maybe Gucci's Alessandro Michele, it's hard to imagine a designer who's made more noise in the fashion world this year than Gvasalia. As BoF puts it: "Over the past 12 months, the Georgian designer has brought a couture sensibility to streetwear at Vetements, and conversely a streetwear sensibility to his work at Balenciaga, rippling throughout the global fashion industry and making him the most impactful voice working in fashion in 2016."
To celebrate this (quite possibly only) bright spot of 2016, here are 10 of Gvasalia's coolest designs that you can buy (or at least lust after) right now.
