Pretend for a second that you've been the fastest man in the world for nearly a decade. You've just won your third consecutive gold medal in the men's 100m dash, and you didn't just win, you won easily. Now, you're running the semi-finals for the 200m race. You'll qualify easily. The only real competition in this race is yourself—can you beat your own world record? It'll be tough. So, you give the semi-finals maybe 75 percent—save a little for the main show. Then there's this 21-year-old kid from Canada, Andre De Grasse. He's good, and he wants to push you a little bit, and he goes all out, trying to pass you.

You let him have his fun. He gets close. But then you give it just a tiny bit more. You move in front, wave your finger, you laugh. At least this kid is making it slightly interesting. He laughs too, knowing it was futile to even try. You finish 0.02 seconds in front. No one beats the fastest man alive.
