The First Baywatch Trailer Doesn't Miss An Opportunity For Seductive Slo-Mo

Light on plot, heavy on brawn.

There are two kinds of TV-to-movie adaptations. The first is the straight-forward variety that takes the source material as seriously as possible—The Fugitive, Mission: Impossible, and The Untouchables are the good examples (while The A-Team, Lost in Space, and The Mod Squad are a few forgettable titles). Then there is the kind of adaptation that acknowledges how ridiculous the original series was and uses that to its advantage: The Brady Bunch Movie, Addams Family Values, and 21 Jump Street all poke fun at their predecessors in an effort to bring them to the big screen.

A Baywatch movie could go either way, honestly. You can take the long-running show, which aired for 11 seasons between 1989 and 2001, and try to update it with explosions and slo-mo running montages. But if you try to make those pecs and breasts scenes seem, well, smart, you're probably going to look like a bad filmmaker.

The first teaser for the upcoming Baywatch movie, which arrives in theatres next May, seems to be going the more ridiculous route. Sure, there are explosions. There are jet ski chases. But there's also Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron delivering a Lethal Weapon-style buddy-cop duo (buddy-lifeguard duo?), with the hulking Johnson as the fed-up veteran and the sinewy Efron as the reckless rookie.

Does it look light on plot? Sure. Does that even matter? Probably not. Will there be slo-mo jogging montages in which boobs and beefcakes bounce on the sand while in lifeguard pursuit? Yep. And you've also got a villain played by Priyanka Chopra, so that's not so bad either. Check out the teaser below
