Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is going down pretty well among die-hard fans and jaded critics alike, proving once and for all that bad early buzz doesn't necessarily mean anything. At the core of that bad buzz were the reports of extensive reshoots—but according to Ben Mendelsohn, several different versions of scenes were shot even during principal photography.
"We did have multiple, multiple ways of going at any given scenario, we had multiple readings of it," Mendelsohn told Collider. "So should they ever decide to, there would be a wealth of ways of approaching these different things. And I know from having seen the crucial scenes throughout it, I know there's vastly different readings of at least four of those scenes."
Which essentially means that there's enough footage on the cutting room floor to create at least one alternative cut of Rogue One, right? "Absolutely," says Mendelsohn, "with enormous differences within I would've said 20 or 30 of the scenes... There would be enormously different renderings."
The reshoots, he added, could have been a result of director Gareth Edwards & Co. saying "Well, this is actually the version we love. So now let's grab that, and that, and that."
Get ready to fork out for the Blu-Ray Special Edition, in other words.
