What did you achieve this weekend?

Nobody flinches much when drug dealers get killed in these parts. But a kill count of 45 in four days is… something else.

Rodrigo ‘The Punisher’ Duterte took over the Philippine presidency on June 30, and since then, at least 45 people with suspected drug links have been killed.

According to Al Jazeera, 29 of those killings happened in Bucalan on Monday, where suspects allegedly shot first, and nine other in Manila on the same day. The day before, two were killed in Pasig, and another five in Manila, where the suspects also shot first. Hmm.

Duterte reiterated his call for open season on drug dealers and traffickers after his swearing in, telling a bunch of supporters “These sons of whores are destroying our children. I warn you, don't go into that, even if you're a policeman, because I will really kill you. If you know of any addicts, go ahead and kill them yourself as getting their parents to do it would be too painful." Because the parents are whores? So confusing.

Meanwhile, Philippine’s top cop Ronald dela Rosa—whose resemblance to Michael Chiklis on The Shield probably isn’t a coincidence—said he would change the birthdays of cops bought with drug money to November 2, or the Day of the Dead.

But the end isn’t in sight. The latest to pledge their support to Duterte’s war on crime are the Communist Party of the Philippines, who have authorised their New People’s Army militia to “disarm and arrest” not just drug dealers, but also any member of any syndicate involved in human trafficking or environmental destruction. The alliance isn’t surprising, given that many in Duterte’s old Davao Death Squad—who killed hundreds in Davao when Duterte was mayor—were former NPA members.
