Malaysian cops will be forced to get fitter (and thereby happier and more productive), with the Trim and Fit fitness programme being made compulsory for all police personnel by 2018.
Police Inspector-General Khalid Abu Bakar said during the close of the Trim and Fit pilot programme that being fitter will not only make cops better at carrying out their doing cop stuff, but will also be a prerequisite for promotion within the ranks.
Around 10 percent or 11,000 of the 122,000 PDRM officers are overweight, which is reflective of the obesity epidemic in the country at large. Malaysia is the most obese country in the whole of Asia, with 18 percent of the country being obese, and a further 30 percent being overweight.
The Trim and Fit pilot programme was launched in January with 35 cops, and requires officers to undergo workouts five times a week and strict diets of no more than 2,000 calories (equivalent to just 10 donuts). And it seems to be working, with some participants having lost up to 21 kg in the course of the six-month programme.
According to an Astro Awani report from earlier in the year, the programme mostly focuses on bodyweight exercises, as well as kayaking and rock climbing. And Zumba too, which seems infinitely less leisurely than what they used to do:
