In a world that feels more divided than ever, what better moment to resurrect the public chat room?
Facebook are currently testing a group version of their chat function called Messenger Rooms in Canada and Australia with a view to roll it out globally.
Leaked code from September suggests that the function will be similar to the Rooms App that Facebook tested in 2014 but halted.
The code for the app was discovered hidden in the Messenger app and contained an explanation of how it works: "rooms are for public conversations about topics and interests. Each Room has a link that can be shared so anyone on Messenger can join the conversation."
Rooms would be created and named based on certain topics, teams, events or people and then are open to the public. Facebook finally acknowledged the feature with their product manger Drew Moxon saying, "This will be for topic-based conversations and so people can talk with others they may not know."
Thankfully given the trend for abusing strangers online, you can create groups that need approval for anyone to join making it more private.
Here's hoping this takes us back to the good old days of shooting the breeze with your buddies on MSN Messenger and only ever arguing about which was the best season of Breaking Bad.
