Man at His Best

Esquire Experience: Live House

Live music, comedy, dancing and great food. And if that's not enough, it's all under one roof.

We're uniquely qualified to speak about Live House, one of KL's newest nightspots. Located at TREC, KL's newest lifestyle and F&B mall and Malaysia's answer to Singapore's Clarke Quay, Live House is a multi-storey space featuring a live music bar on the ground floor and a comedy/performance space upstairs. Last year's Esquire's Best Dressed Real Man grand finale party was held here, attracting a gorgeous standing room crowd of around 300 sartorially-savvy partygoers, supporters of finalists and friends of Esquire Malaysia.

Watch the Best Dressed Real Man 2015 highlights below:

The space hosts two stages—the Main Room downstairs being big enough for one of our finalists to do his best Michael Jackson dance impression, sans crotch-grabbing. (refer to video above), whilst upstairs LOL@Live House, is primarily for comedy acts. On regular nights, the Main Room plays host to live bands, both local and international. Currently, local rockers Hydra are on stage pumping up a lively vibe as you grab a few cold ones with your boys.

Canadian band Elevate, who recently finished a successful run on Live House's Main Stage.

Live House is an upscale venue, but with brick walls, exposed ceilings and hardwood flooring exposed evenly in ambient lighting, you'll find the vibe casual and inviting. Joseph Ryan, partner and global head of venues at Attacca Capital, the company that owns Live House, wanted to create a space where guests "can be exactly who they want to be, not who they have to be at work or in society." So if you're a Bathroom Shower Singing Idol, or a So You Think You Can Living Room Dance champion, Ryan assures that "you are welcome to do so openly all under one roof at Live House.

Those looking to blow off steam should take note that upstairs provides a reprieve for exactly that. LOL@Live House is a milestone of sorts for the comedy industry in KL—finally, comedy in KL has a proper slick and posh space to call home. The space is equipped with a full bar, balcony seats overlooking a lush golf course, a stage big enough to fit a five-man band and comfortably spaced, comedy club style seating (Tip: unless you've got chops to match the comedian's, nothing good can come with sitting in the front table).

"After six years of doing comedy shows everywhere, it's a special feeling to have your own venue," says Rizal Kamal, local comedian and partner at LOL. "We designed the space specifically for comedy and will have some of the best circuit comedians in the world come here to perform. To have the biggest comedy club in SEA, second biggest in Asia and one of the best looking, is pretty darn cool."

To date, the space has hosted some of KL's most sought after comedians, including Joey Medina, Douglas Lim, Andrew Netto and Jason Leong. The space expects to welcome international acts the likes of Australian Jacques Barrett, South African author and comedian David Smeidt, New Jersey-born Butch Bradley and Hong Kong-based American Jim Brewskey. Talk about upping the talent ante.

While the trend may be changing in recent times, it's often been a given that live entertainment venues all over the world offer greasy menus designed not to delight, but merely quell hunger while you watch the performances. Live House solved that problem nicely by teaming up with Killer Gourmet Burgers (KGB) to ensure that their patrons food money is well-spent. The Tex-Mex inspired food list includes a good array of small bites—including sliders (mini burgers), a variety of cheesy fries and the must-try salted egg yolk fried chicken wings.

Live House is situated at the end of Electric Boulevard, the second phase of the still developing TREC mall. Five more projects—the Hive, the Box, the Terraces, Rhapsody Square and Alcove, which will feature a unique blend of food, entertainment, shopping and living units—are already underway, and when the place is fully developed, Live House will be in the thick of the action.

Live House is at TREC KL on Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur. For more info, visit their website.
